Diagram of Stages
Developmental stages of the cellular sime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum.
Dictyostelium discoideum spends much of its life cycle as feeding myxamoebae. When food runs out, the myxamobae aggregate to form a migratory pseudoplasmodium (grex, or slug), which searches for a new environment that will be suitable as a feeding ground. Once this is found, the slug settles on its posterior end, taking a "Mexican hat" form, which then culminates into a mature fruiting body. The spores from the fruiting body are released and hatch into myxamoebae, starting the cycle over again.
